Serena Fernando (Mumbai)
I am a dedicated Bharatanatyam dancer, nurtured under the legendary Guru Rajee Narayan. I was introduced to this classical Indian dance at age five, blossoming into a lifelong journey of learning and discipline. In 2009, I joined Nritya Geetanjali and, with steadfast sadhana, completed my Arangetram within just a year, an accomplishment that speaks volumes of my dedication. My repertoire was enriched with rare pieces such as the Murugan Kavuthvam, Sankeernam Alarippu, evocative Javali and Tillana set to the distinctive pancha jaathi choreography. The Varnam Thirumaal radiated the essence of madhura bhakti, immersing the audience in its devotional beauty.
I was blessed to assist my Guruji in the acclaimed Dasavatharam project, an immersive experience that spanned learning, performing, teaching and even recording in a professional studio. I accompanied her for a workshop hosted by G.V. Ramani Natya Kala Foundation, Navi Mumbai, an endeavor that deepened my understanding of both the art form and its collaborative spirit.
In 2014, I presented a completely new margam, a heartfelt dedication to my beloved Guruji. Aptly titled Samarpanam, the recital featured carefully chosen pieces, including Aaduvaar, a Nataraja Padam and Anname Varnam, each revealing my Guru’s artistry. I feel privileged to have learnt these rare and unique compositions from Guruji herself. I have performed at the renowned Natyanjali festival in Mumbai. I have also learnt Nattuvangam and Carnatic music from Guruji.
Currently, I work at Reliance Foundation, Mumbai. While my academic pursuits in Public Policy from the prestigious St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, charts a different career professionally in the non-profit sector, my artistic journey remains an unwavering samarpanam to my Guru and this timeless tradition. Today, I continue to learn under Smt. Jaishree Rao, a senior disciple of Guru Rajee Narayan, carrying forward a legacy of grace, discipline and devotion.
