Lavanya Rao

Lavanya Rao (Kent, UK)

I was introduced to Aunty by Shri Rana, Founder of Shivali Cultural Society, who said that if I wanted to pursue dance, Guru Rajee would be the most appropriate person to learn from. When I first arrived at SIES School where she held her classes, a very majestic looking lady with a radiant face sat amidst a lot of students.

As I started learning from her, I realized that I had to travel quite a distance to reach dance class; that did not deter me. Aunty was always aware of the calibre of each student. She was a task-master, extremely punctual, disciplined but very warm, witty and had a wonderful sense of humour too. I was in awe of her; she was so well versed in all aspects of dance, music, history, just about everything.

Her generosity knew no bounds. Her positivity has inspired me to progress in the field of dance, after a very long break and has encouraged me not only to continue performing, but also start teaching. I am fortunate to have conducted my first Arangetram recently. As I sat on stage with the orchestra, ready to perform Nattuvangam for my first time, I could feel her presence, watching me with critical, loving eyes.

She has been a guiding light in my life who taught me Bharatanatyam, even as I learnt life-skills from her.
